In response to the ever-evolving global
security landscape, the United States has unveiled its intention to create a
new nuclear bomb, known as the B61-13, with a staggering 24 times the power of
the bombs that were infamously dropped on Japan during World War II. This
groundbreaking development was reported by Fox News, underscoring the
significance of this move amid current geopolitical dynamics.
The decision to pursue this modern
variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb is still pending Congressional
authorization and funding, as stated in a press release by the US Department of Defense. The production of the B61-13 would be entrusted to the Department of
Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). This initiative was
taken in close coordination with the NNSA, aligning with the strategic
requirements highlighted in the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review.
In the wake of shifting threats,
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb has underscored the
significance of this endeavor. He expressed, 'The United States is entrusted
with the duty of continuously evaluating and deploying the necessary
capabilities to maintain a credible deterrent and, when the need arises,
respond effectively to strategic threats while also assuring our allied
partners.
The B61-13, once developed, would be
deployable by modern aircraft, bolstering deterrence against adversaries and
providing the President with a broader range of options to address formidable,
large-area military targets. It is designed to replace some of the existing
B61-7 bombs in the nation's nuclear stockpile and boasts a yield comparable to
the B61-7, surpassing that of the B61-12.
This development follows a
high-explosive experiment carried out by the United States at a nuclear testing
site in Nevada. Although the US claimed this was a scheduled test, it occurred
shortly after Russia lifted its ban on atomic weapons testing, marking a
significant geopolitical event.
In response to concerns, the US Department of State clarified that the pursuit of the B61-13 had been under consideration for several months and was not prompted by any specific current event but was rather a response to the changing security landscape.

Assistant Secretary Plumb asserted, "The
B61-13 represents a reasonable step to manage the challenges of a highly
dynamic security environment," and it would not result in an increase in
the overall number of nuclear weapons in the US stockpile. The B61-13 project
would leverage existing production capabilities, incorporating modern safety,
security, and precision features from the B61-12.
This announcement underscores the United States' commitment to adapting its defense capabilities to meet the demands of a rapidly shifting global security environment.
