The Chinese Government appears to be angered by the meeting between the US Special Envoy and the Dalai Lama in Delhi, as relations between the two nations hang in the balance.
Bejing has strongly disapproved of the meeting between the US special envoy and the Dalai Lama. It has deemed this act of the US as an interference in China's domestic matters. In response to the meeting, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Delhi, Wang Xiaojian, expressed China's firm opposition to any interaction between foreign officials and the "Tibetan independence" forces.
The meeting referred to was held by the US Under Secretary and Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues in the Biden administration, Uzra Zeya, with the 14th Dalai Lama in Delhi on Sunday. A high-level US delegation along with senior officials from the Tibetan government in exile were also present at the meeting.
It was anticipated that the meeting would draw the ire of the Chinese government. Xiaojian took to Twitter to express China's displeasure over the meeting. He stated that the affairs concerning Xizang (Tibet) are solely internal matters of China and that external forces have no authority to interfere.
While questioning the very existence of the post of the US Special Coordinator for Tibet Issues, Xiaojian described it as a “pure offense and a move of political manipulation to interfere in China’s internal affairs." He also reiterated that China has consistently and firmly opposed this role and has never recognised it.
“The so-called “Tibetan government-in-exile" is an out-and-out separatist political group and an illegal organization completely in violation of China’s Constitution and laws", the Chinese spokesperson added.
This is not the first time this incident has taken place. During her visit to India in May 2022, the US special envoy had previously met with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, located in the state of Himachal Pradesh. In response to the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed its disapproval, labelling the meeting as an interference in China's internal affairs.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, conveyed to the media that the US should only adhere to its commitment to recognizing Tibet as a part of China. He also stated that the US should refrain from providing any support to separatist activities led by the "anti-China Dalai clique."
