Pakistan faced a 60-run defeat against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy opener, exposing batting and bowling weaknesses. Wasim Akram dismissed criticism over player selection, asserting that Pakistan’s best players are already in the squad. With a crucial match against India ahead, pressure mounts on the struggling team.

Pakistan's Champions Trophy campaign got off to a disappointing start as they suffered a crushing 60-run defeat against New Zealand in the tournament opener. The loss, their third against the Kiwis in just two weeks, highlighted weaknesses in their batting lineup and raised concerns ahead of their upcoming clash against India.
Chasing a daunting 321, Pakistan never gained momentum, with key players struggling to make an impact. Captain Mohammad Rizwan managed just three runs, while Saud Shakeel and Fakhar Zaman also failed to provide stability. Babar Azam’s 64 off 90 deliveries lacked aggression, and by the time the lower order attempted a comeback, the match had already slipped away.
Pakistan’s bowling also faltered, with Haris Rauf conceding 83 runs in his 10 overs. Star pacer Shaheen Afridi struggled in the death overs, while part-time spinners failed to contain New Zealand’s batting onslaught. Centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young further cemented New Zealand’s dominance.
Following the defeat, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram addressed growing criticism, particularly regarding player selection. He dismissed the long-standing claim that some players are selected based on influence rather than merit, stating, “At this level, ‘parchi’ (reference-based selection) doesn’t work.” Akram emphasised that the current squad consists of Pakistan’s best available players.

Adding to Pakistan’s woes, a low turnout from home supporters was observed at the stadium, reflecting disappointment among fans. The loss puts the team under significant pressure as they prepare for their high-stakes encounter against India, a match that could determine their fate in the tournament.
