West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on August 9 said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre should quit Delhi.

She said this while addressing a gathering on the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples in the tribal-dominated district of Jhargram.

Banerjee further highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rights of these communities for the greater good of humanity and asked the BJP-led central government to "vacate Delhi."

Banerjee also took the opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making promises before elections that go unfulfilled. Through a Twitter post, she called for unity across societal divisions to uphold the rights of indigenous people, emphasizing the broader human perspective.

Her visit to Jhargram spanned three days and involved inaugurating 437 projects while laying the foundation for an additional 246 initiatives across West Bengal.

Reiterating her stance, Banerjee opposed the imposition of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), particularly its application to marriage practices. She argued against enforcing a single set of rules and expressed her dissent toward its implementation, even though no official draft of the proposed UCC has been presented.

Regarding the ongoing violence in Manipur, Banerjee extended a willingness to provide relief aid if permitted. The exchange with BJP leader Rahul Sinha underscored the larger political dynamics, revealing tensions between parties and regions.

Overall, Banerjee's actions and statements during her Jhargram visit reflect the complex interplay of indigenous rights, the Uniform Civil Code debate, and regional political complexities in West Bengal.
