Katra witnessed a 72-hour blockade against the Vaishno Devi ropeway project, halting services and stranding pilgrims. Locals argue the project threatens their income, sparking protests and police action. Despite interventions, the strike continues with political backing, as pilgrims request relief.
A 72-hour blockade led by local business owners and pony operators began on December 25 in Katra, opposing the ₹250-crore Mata Vaishno Devi ropeway project. The protest, organized by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti, brought daily activities in the town to a standstill.
The ropeway, planned by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, aims to ease the 13-km pilgrimage for elderly and physically challenged devotees by connecting Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat near the cave shrine. However, locals fear the project threatens their livelihoods, as many rely on the traditional path to provide services like pony rides, portering, and shops.
Tensions flared during the protest when police resorted to lathi charges to disperse demonstrators, leading to several arrests. In response, security forces conducted flag marches to maintain order.
Pilgrims voiced frustration over the shutdown of restaurants and services. "We are facing severe inconvenience. The bandh is making it hard to find food and shelter," said Aruna, a pilgrim from Meerut. Others urged protesters to reconsider the strike, citing the hardship faced by thousands of visitors.

Despite police intervention, the bandh continues, with local BJP and Congress leaders expressing support. A scheduled meeting with Reasi’s deputy commissioner was postponed, leading protesters to accuse authorities of stalling. The Samiti vowed to persist until their concerns are addressed.
