Adipurush Faces Backlash at The Theatres

Adipurush, one of the highly anticipated films in recent times, faced a serious backlash throughout the corners of India since its release on Friday, i.e., 16th of June. Comprising some of the eminent superstars in the film industry, with the likes of Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan as the lead characters, Adipurush is hanging by a thread at the moment!

The response Adipurush received is strange given the current dynamics but if you have grown up watching "Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama" like me, you will understand the chaos around the movie!

If you are a 90s kid (as they denote it), you must have at least watched the epic animated version of Ramayana once in your childhood. Directed by Koichi Sasaki and produced by Yugo Sako, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama was a movie etched in our hearts forever.

And if you have seen it, chances are you also know about the controversy associated with the movie!

It was banned initially in India following allegations that the Japanese Anime wasn't an accurate depiction of the Hindu epic and that Gods and Goddesses shouldn't be portrayed in animated forms.

Later on, the ban was revoked, and thankfully, we could witness such an epic work of art in our childhood.

Almost 30 years after its release, we were presented with another opportunity to dive deep into nostalgia when Adipurush was released on the big screen on Friday. However, to the disappointment of everyone, it failed to live up to the hype.

Let's not talk about the visuals, VFX, or the costumes used in the film. (Obviously, the film lacks in here as well) What disappointed me the most, and I am pretty sure you as well, are the tweaks in the storyline and the delivery.

There were so many instances where Adipurush diverted from the original storyline, and it felt that the director put his own ideas into the film. From the abduction of Sita by Ravana to the killing of the King of Lanka by Rama, Adipurush never holds true to the original story written in the scriptures and conveyed through generations.

Adding on to that, the dialogues were clearly a blunder, and it will be better for all of us to forget it asap!

So, even with such an "inaccurate depiction" of our beloved Ramayana, how is Adipurush still going strong? Why are critics, the government, and the general public of the country not speaking up against this bizarre portrayal of our history?

Is #banAdipurush not trending because the movie aligns with the right-wing narrative of promoting one particular culture? In recent times, we have seen movies such as Manikarnika, The Kashmir Files, and The Kerala Story gaining huge fanbases despite their inaccurate or completely one-sided portrayal of events.

With Bollywood showing a concrete inclination toward the right-wing narrative, it will be a surprise to see #banAdipurush trending anytime soon.

In a country where films like Pathaan, Laal Singh Chaddha, Thappad, and A Suitable Boy, to name a few (not to forget the animated version of Ramayana), faced severe fallout among the public, the question arises of why a "historically inaccurate" film like Adipurush is still running on the road while collecting good old dimes!

Art, be it in any form, must be a way to express one's thoughts and expressions. It mustn't be blended with politics or winged narratives to favor a few!

It is high time people come out of their ideologies and unite as one to safeguard our culture and identity. Our traditions have stood the test of time and passed down for thousands of generations. The onus lies on you and me to decide if Adipurush is the "right" way to conduct our values to the future generation!
