Admiral Dinesh Tripathi is the newly appointed Chief of the Indian Navy, the government announced on the 2nd of October. Tripathi, with his nearly 40 years of outstanding career in communication warfare and strategic leadership, can be said to possess the requisite skill sets and competencies for the new role that he has just been appointed to.

At present, the position held by the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Tripathi, will be replaced on the 30th of April. One year before that, a new admiral retired after the end of his three-year tenure, and that admiral was Admiral R. Hari Kumar.

Tripathi, an officer with expertise in communication and electronic warfare, has served on frontline warships both as a Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. He was the chief executive officer and principal warfare officer for the guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai during his service on board. Apart from the ship commands of INS Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul, he also had various other commands.

Tripathi has held several important operational as well as staff positions, such as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet in Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director of Network Centric Operations, and Principal Director of Naval Plans.

He was a Rear Admiral, and he was Assistant Chief of Naval Staff for Policy and Plans at Naval Headquarters. Later, he was a Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Fleet. He was bestowed with the role of Commandant of the INA at Ezhimala in 2019. For the period of 2020 through 2021, while acting as the director general of the Navy’s operations, he guaranteed that the Navy remained combat-ready amidst the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic.
