Russia has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Ukraine, marking the first use of such a powerful weapon in the ongoing war. The missile struck the city of Dnipro in central-eastern Ukraine on Thursday morning, according to Ukraine's air force. This missile launch follows increased tensions after Ukraine utilized US and British-supplied missiles against Russian targets earlier this week. Moscow had warned that such actions would lead to an escalation in the 33-month-long conflict.
ICBMs are strategic weapons primarily designed to carry nuclear warheads, and their deployment has significant implications. However, it is unclear whether the missile used in the attack was nuclear-armed, as Ukraine did not specify its type or warhead. Despite this, the missile strike caused substantial damage, with local authorities confirming that it targeted industrial facilities, sparking fires and injuring at least two people.
In addition to the ICBM, Russia also fired a Kinzhal hypersonic missile and seven Kh-101 cruise missiles, six of which were intercepted by Ukrainian defenses. This attack is part of a broader strategy by Russia to target Ukraine's critical infrastructure, with the escalation coming as the war entered its 1,000th day.
