President Vladimir Putin, addressing a gathering in Moscow, expressed Russia's readiness for negotiations concerning Ukraine. He iterated Moscow's willingness to engage with Ukraine, the US, and Europe on the matter. However, Putin firmly asserted Russia's commitment to safeguarding its national interests amid these discussions.

Putin's stance focused on defending what Russia deems its own, explicitly stating, "We will not give up what is ours." Emphasizing Russia's intent not to engage in conflict with Europe, Putin spotlighted their control over approximately 17.5% of the territory previously recognized as part of Ukraine.

The geopolitical tensions trace back to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. Additionally, Russia claims ownership of four more Ukrainian regions where its troops hold partial control. In contrast, Kyiv insists on the complete removal of Russian soldiers from Ukrainian soil.

During the high-profile meeting, Putin addressed key military figures like Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, General Valery Gerasimov, and FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov. He emphasized that Russian troops now held the initiative on the battlefield.

While reiterating the continuation of their military operation's goals, Putin acknowledged the need for improved military communication, reconnaissance, targeting, and satellite capabilities. Highlighting Russia's military advancements, Shoigu stated a significant increase in tank production, unmanned aerial vehicles, and artillery shells since February 2022.

Furthermore, Shoigu disclosed the significant recruitment of contract and voluntary soldiers in 2023, with plans to expand the contracted force next year. Notably, Russian forces have fortified Ukrainian territories with extensive minefields, anti-tank barriers, and ditches.

Lastly, Putin made a clear stance against Ukraine's NATO membership, deeming it unacceptable for Russia in the foreseeable future.
