Anurag Kashyap Expresses Regret Over Daughter Aaliyah's Bond with Imtiaz Ali, Wishes He Had Done More for Her

Anurag Kashyap, the accomplished filmmaker, has expressed a sense of missed opportunities in his relationship with his daughter, Aaliyah, during her formative years. In a candid conversation with Film Companion, he disclosed that due to Aaliyah's frequent visits to his film sets and her friendship with Ida Ali, she naturally grew closer to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, Ida's father, over time. Born in 2001 to Anurag and his ex-wife Aarti Bajaj, Aaliyah has since become engaged to Shaun Gregoire, marking the next chapter in her life.

Speaking to Film Companion, Anurag Kashyap candidly shared his deep fear of losing loved ones. He came to a profound realization after years of relentlessly pursuing his passion for filmmaking, where he consecutively worked on one project after another. During this journey, he admitted to neglecting important aspects of his life. It wasn't until a sudden decline in his health that he comprehended the extent of his neglect. 

He had been engaged in a rigorous routine of work, yoga, and swimming, feeling virtually invulnerable. But when his health took an unexpected turn, it became apparent that no amount of effort could prevent it. In that moment of vulnerability and isolation, he recognized how he had unintentionally isolated himself while relentlessly striving to make his films in his unique style, fighting tirelessly for creative control.

He went on to reflect, "There comes a point where it hits me that my daughter has suddenly grown up. I stumble upon her old pictures, and it dawns on me how much I miss those moments. I find myself in the company of Aarti, Aaliyah's friend Ida, Ida's mom Preeti, and Imtiaz... They engage in lively conversations, reminiscing about past holidays and shared experiences. While I sit there, a nagging question haunts me: 'Where was I?' It becomes painfully clear that Imtiaz has spent more quality time with my daughter than I have. It's a realization that gnaws at your conscience, leaving you unsure whether an apology would even suffice, given that it feels too late."

Despite these regrets, Anurag acknowledges that Aaliyah has forgiven him. He understands that the pursuit of making low-budget films demanded twice the effort, a sacrifice that Aaliyah comprehends. Nonetheless, he acknowledges that he should have struck a better balance to ensure he didn't miss out on important moments in her life.
