According to a warning issued by tech giant Apple on Thursday, some iPhone owners in India and 91 other countries may have been the subject of "mercenary spyware," which includes the controversial Pegasus software. This information was revealed in The Indian Express. The emails were sent out to Indian users at approximately 12:30 a.m. Indian Standard Time. It is uncertain how many people received the notice specifically.

Since 2021, the IT Company has repeatedly sent out similar alerts warning consumers of an assault. In October, Apple revealed that it believed "state-sponsored attackers" might have targeted the iPhones of many members of the Indian Opposition and at least four journalists.

However, the company subsequently stated that it did not associate the danger warnings with any specific actor with a governmental sponsorship.

Early on Thursday morning, no one was identified as the accused attackers in the threat notification.

"ALERT: Apple detected a targeted mercenary spyware attack against your iPhone," the email's subject line stated, according to The Indian Express.

The message states that Apple has discovered a mercenary malware attack that aims to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-....You are most likely the target of this attack due to who you are or what you do.

The company continued by claiming that Pegasus and related technologies were being utilized to target individuals worldwide.

Governments all across the world can license the Pegasus spyware from Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO Group. Regarding the company, they only sell its software to "vetted governments" with a track record of upholding human rights, and their software is specifically meant to target criminals.

However, a number of international media sites disclosed in July 2021 that governments all around the world were utilizing Pegasus to eavesdrop on dissidents.

According to an email message from Apple on Thursday, mercenary spyware attacks—like the ones that used Pegasus—are incredibly rare and far more sophisticated than regular cybercrime or consumer malware, as the Economic Times noted.

It asserted that these attacks, which run into the millions of dollars each, only target a small portion of the population but go on continuously throughout the world.
