The Defence infrastructure of India has grown in leaps and bounds after Rs. 19,500 crore contracts were signed with Indian shipyards. These mega Rs. 19,500 crore contracts serve another purpose as well. It is a Great push towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign started by PM Narendra Modi.

Details of The Rs 19,600 Crore Contracts

The Rs 19,600 Crore Contracts have become a flag bearer of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission since all the manufacturers are Indian. The defense equipment that are about to be procured include 6 next-gen missile vehicles (NGMVs) and 11 next-gen offshore patrol vehicles. Out of this, Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has received the contract for developing 7 patrol ships while Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata has received the contract to manufacture the rest 4 patrol ships. The delivery of patrol ships to the Indian Navy is expected to be concluded by September 2026. The contract for the missile ships has been received by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Power of The Equipments

The Ministry of Defence has said, “The NGMVs would be heavily armed war vessels incorporating stealth, high speed and offensive capability. The primary role of the ships would be to provide offensive capability against enemy warships, merchantmen and land targets.” While the construction of the patrol ships are expected to provide an employment of 110 lakh man-days in a span of 7 and half years, the construction of the missile ships are expected to provide an employment of 45 lakh man-days over 9 years.

A Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat by Rs 19,600 Crore Contracts

The indigenous contract will encourage ship-building Companies and MSMEs in India to participate with the Indian Defence forces in research and development for better military equipment. The Rs 19,600 crore contracts not only has boosted Atmanirbhar Bharat but also provided employment in Large scale to Indian workers.
