Bangladesh cricket team made history on Saturday by securing an astounding 546-run victory against Afghanistan in a one-off Test match held at Mirpur. This resounding win not only marked the third-largest margin of victory in Test cricket for any nation but also became the biggest win by runs in the 21st century. Furthermore, it stands as the largest victory by runs for an Asian side in such a manner.

 

Winning the toss, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi elected to field first, giving Bangladesh the opportunity to bat. The Bangladeshi batsmen seized this chance and put on a dominant display throughout the match. Najmul Hossain Shanto played a remarkable innings, scoring a magnificent century with 146 runs, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy contributed a valuable half-century, adding 76 runs to the team's total. Their stellar performances helped Bangladesh post a formidable score of 382 runs in their first innings.

In response, Afghanistan struggled to mount a significant challenge and could only manage a paltry total of 146 runs. Afsar Zazai top-scored for his side with 36 runs, but their batting lineup failed to provide substantial contributions. The Bangladesh pacers, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam, played pivotal roles by taking crucial wickets in the top order. At this stage, Afghanistan found themselves trailing by a substantial margin of 236 runs.

 

Bangladesh's aggressive batting continued in their second innings, further extending their advantage over Afghanistan. Shanto once again showcased his brilliance, scoring another century with 124 runs, while Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 121 runs. Zakir Hasan and Litton Das also made valuable contributions, scoring 71 and 66 unbeaten runs respectively. With an aggressive declaration at 425/4 in just 80 overs, Bangladesh set a massive target of 662 runs for Afghanistan.

 

Unfortunately for Afghanistan, their second innings proved to be even worse as they collapsed and were bowled out for a mere 115 runs. Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam spearheaded Bangladesh's bowling attack, claiming four wickets for 37 runs and three wickets for 28 runs respectively. Rahmat Shah was the only Afghan batsman who managed to surpass the 20-run mark, scoring 30 runs. Karim Janat and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi were the only other batters who reached double digits, with scores of 18 and 13 respectively.
