Union Minister Bhupender Yadav sparked a row in the Rajya Sabha by accusing Congress of treating the 'sengol' as a "walking stick," instead of a symbol of justice. The remark was met with protests from Congress MPs, with BJP President JP Nadda supporting the narrative about the sengol's historical significance.
Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav ignited a political row in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, accusing the Congress of treating the 'sengol', a symbolic staff of justice, as a "walking stick" instead of respecting it as a symbol of India's history.
Yadav’s comment drew immediate protests from opposition MPs, with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh dismissing the narrative about the sengol as fabricated by the BJP, claiming it was never formally handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru.
Yadav further questioned why the sengol had been "hidden" for 75 years, referring to its absence from public knowledge until recently when the BJP made it a central symbol in the context of India's Independence.
In response, BJP President JP Nadda supported Yadav’s statement, claiming that during Independence, Lord Mountbatten had asked Nehru about any rituals related to the transfer of power. Nadda alleged that Nehru had said there were none, and when the sengol was eventually placed in a museum, it was labeled as “Jawaharlal Nehru’s walking stick.”
