Mukhtar Ansari:-
Congress Leader Ajay Rai, who tragically lost his brother Awadhesh Rai to the hands of Mukhtar Ansari, expressed his satisfaction with the court's decision to sentence criminal-turned-politician to life imprisonment and impose a fine of Rupees 1 lakh for the 1991 murder case.
In light of Ansari's conviction, Ajay Rai voiced concerns about his own safety, firmly placing the responsibility on the BJP government if any untoward incident were to occur.
Addressing the media, Rai proclaimed, "Today, after a relentless battle spanning 32 years, we have emerged victorious. We wholeheartedly embrace the court's verdict... Should any harm befall me, the BJP government shall bear the consequences."
Significantly, it was on August 3, 1991, when a tragic incident unfolded outside the residence of Congress leader Ajay Rai in Varanasi. Awadhesh Rai, the esteemed brother of former MLA Ajay Rai, was ruthlessly gunned down on that fateful day.
Anticipating the court's sentencing decision, Ajay Rai expressed his unwavering trust in the judicial system, emphasizing the need for Mukhtar Ansari to receive the most severe punishment available. Rai further highlighted Ansari's repeated attempts to manipulate and tamper with crucial evidence, underscoring the urgency for justice to be served.
After the conclusion of arguments on May 19, the Special Court reserved its order and scheduled June 5 as the date for the long-awaited verdict.
Tragically, on August 3, 1991, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded outside Ajay Rai's residence in Varanasi's Lahurabir area, falling under the jurisdiction of Chetganj police station. Awadhesh, standing outside, was suddenly targeted by assailants traveling in a Maruti van who opened fire on him. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Awadhesh succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family.
In the aftermath of this horrific incident, Ajay Rai wasted no time in filing an FIR at Chetganj police station, specifically naming Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh, Kamlesh Singh, Rakesh, and former MLA Abdul Kalam as the accused. It is worth noting that two of the accused, Kamlesh and Abdul Kalam, have since passed away.
In a separate case involving the kidnapping and murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, Mukhtar Ansari faced a sentence of 10 years in prison along with a fine of Rupees 5 lakh, which was handed down by an MP-MLA court in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, in April of this year.
Alongside his brother Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, a Member of Parliament from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), also faced conviction in the same case. The court handed Afzal a four-year prison sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
With a staggering number of nearly 60 cases against him, Ansari has spent more than 15 years behind bars. It is noteworthy that both Mukhtar and Afzal Ansari joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 2007, vehemently denying the veracity of the charges against them.
