Brij Bhushan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a BJP MP, announced on Sunday his intention to run in the 2024 Lok Sabha election from his Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

However, his declaration comes amidst an ongoing investigation into multiple allegations of sexual harassment made against him by several women wrestlers.

The WFI Chief remarked, "I will contest the election from Kaiserganj Lok Sabha constituency."

Addressing the Sanyukt Morcha Sammelan in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, Brij Bhushan also expressed confidence in the BJP's ability to secure an absolute majority and win all seats in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming elections.

The allegations against Brij Bhushan prompted prominent Indian wrestlers, including Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat, to stage protests in Delhi earlier this year, demanding his removal and arrest.

Despite facing restrictions under Section 144, the wrestlers planned a march and protest near the new Parliament but were detained by the Delhi police, who filed FIRs against them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Subsequently, the protesting wrestlers traveled to Haridwar to immerse their medals in the Ganga. Later, they met with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who assured them that the ongoing investigation into the allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh would be completed by June 15.

Thakur also stated that an Internal Complaint Committee, headed by a woman, would be formed within the wrestling federation to address such issues.

The wrestlers requested the withdrawal of the FIRs against them and urged that Brij Bhushan Singh and his associates be barred from standing in future elections. In return, they pledged not to stage any further protests until June 15.
