Canada Signals Diplomatic Reset with India, Distances Itself from Pro-Khalistan Lobby

Canada’s new government is resetting ties with India by distancing itself from the pro-Khalistan lobby. The G7 meeting between PMs Modi and Carney affirmed a renewed focus on mutual respect, trade, and sovereignty. Diplomatic appointments, roundtables, and dialogue mechanisms indicate a step-by-step revival of the bilateral relationship.

The Canadian government under Prime Minister Mark Carney is showing signs of shifting its approach to India, signalling that it will no longer let pro-Khalistan groups dictate the course of bilateral relations. Recent meetings and diplomatic interactions have reinforced expectations of a more balanced and pragmatic approach between the two nations.

The shift comes after Carney extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, this June. Despite opposition from pro-Khalistan voices, the meeting marked what many observers see as the beginning of a diplomatic thaw.

Former Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria, who attended recent closed-door roundtables in Ottawa and Toronto, said that signals from Canada suggest a prioritisation of national interest over diaspora-driven politics. Though Bisaria avoided direct references, past governments have faced criticism for being swayed by groups advocating separatist ideologies.

The official Canadian readout from the G7 meeting confirmed a mutual commitment to strengthening India-Canada ties based on respect for sovereignty, the rule of law, and territorial integrity. Both sides also discussed deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, critical minerals, and the Indo-Pacific region.

A major step forward includes the reinstatement of High Commissioners in New Delhi and Ottawa, with diplomatic formalities expected to be completed by August. The two countries are also resuming several bilateral dialogue platforms.

The roundtables, led by the Indo-Canadian Business Chamber, featured senior diplomats and trade officials, reflecting renewed interest in commercial partnerships. These forums, attended by officials from Global Affairs Canada and India’s diplomatic corps, are likely to continue, suggesting ongoing momentum in restoring trust and expanding cooperation.
