The Indian government has approved a memorial for former President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtriya Smriti complex. His daughter, Sharmistha, thanked Prime Minister Modi for the gesture, highlighting her father's values. The decision was praised by the Mukherjee family, though Sharmistha criticized the Congress for neglecting proper tributes after his death.
The Narendra Modi-led government has officially approved the construction of a memorial for former President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtriya Smriti complex, located within the Rajghat precinct. A formal letter informing his daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, was shared by the government, announcing the designation of a site for erecting a samadhi in his honor.
Pranab Mukherjee, awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, served as the nation’s 13th President from 2012 to 2017 and passed away in 2020 at the age of 84. Expressing gratitude, Sharmistha took to social media to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this unexpected but highly appreciated gesture, emphasizing that the decision was especially meaningful as her family had never requested such an honor.
In her post, Sharmistha reflected on her father's values, quoting his belief that state honors should not be sought but offered. She expressed her joy, stating, “Words cannot express my gratitude for this gracious gesture by PM Modi." She also highlighted how her father, though beyond any earthly recognition, would have appreciated the gesture, acknowledging its significance for his family.

Mukherjee's son, Abhijit, also praised the government's move, noting that it was a significant moment not just for their family but also for West Bengal and the Congress party. Meanwhile, Sharmistha criticized the Congress party for failing to convene a meeting following her father’s passing, calling it an example of the party's internal issues.
