China, Peru, and Ecuador on Alert After Russia’s Massive Quake Triggers Tsunami Warnings

Tsunami warnings have been issued in China, Peru, and Ecuador after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Russia’s Kamchatka region. Waves are expected to impact eastern China and South America’s Pacific coasts. Evacuations are underway in the Galapagos Islands and Japan, while Hawaii activates emergency measures amid a growing regional alert.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for China, Peru, and Ecuador following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday. The seismic jolt, the strongest globally in 14 years, has prompted emergency measures across the Pacific Rim as authorities brace for possible coastal impacts.

China’s Ministry of National Resources confirmed that tsunami waves of up to one metre are expected to hit parts of eastern China. Coastal regions have been advised to prepare for potential flooding and wave damage. The warning follows earlier alerts issued for Japan and Russia, with waves already reaching Japan’s northern coastline.

In South America, Peru’s Navy issued a tsunami warning for its Pacific coast, stating that conditions will be closely monitored. The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation emphasized that the alert followed extensive analysis by the national tsunami center.

Ecuador also issued an emergency directive, calling for immediate evacuations in the Galapagos Islands. Maritime activity has been suspended, and beaches, docks, and other low-lying zones are being cleared as a precaution.

The United States has also activated its tsunami alert system, particularly in Hawaii, where evacuation efforts are underway. Sirens sounded across Honolulu, urging residents and tourists to move to higher ground. Japan, meanwhile, has already reported tsunami waves of 30 cm striking Hokkaido.

This earthquake is considered the most powerful since the 2011 disaster in Japan, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life. Officials in several nations have warned that additional waves may follow and could be larger than initial ones. Emergency services remain on standby, and coastal populations are being urged to stay away from the shore and follow official updates closely.
