Amid heightened tensions, Taiwan reported Chinese balloons breaching its territory near Keelung. This marks the second incident in a month before their Presidential elections. China's escalating pressure tactics include frequent military movements, raising concerns over espionage. The Defense Ministry detected the balloons, but suspicions of spying remain unconfirmed.
Taiwan
witnessed another breach of its airspace as two Chinese balloons were detected
near the island, heightening security concerns ahead of the upcoming
Presidential elections. The Defence Ministry of the Republic of China (ROC)
confirmed the incursion, reporting the balloons crossing the sensitive Taiwan
Strait, approximately 110 nautical miles northwest of Keelung on Sunday.
This
incident follows a similar occurrence earlier in the month when a Chinese
balloon infiltrated southwest of Keelung on December 7, raising alarms within
Taiwan's security apparatus.
Speculation about China's potential espionage activities via weather balloons intensified following the US's interception of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic earlier this year, provoking strong reactions from China. However, Taiwan's Defence Ministry refrained from officially attributing the recent balloons to spying operations.
China's
Foreign Ministry remained silent regarding these events, even as Beijing has
consistently heightened pressure on Taiwan. Military activities, including
frequent deployments of aircraft and warships, underscore China's
assertiveness, coinciding with Taiwan's preparations for the January 13
presidential elections.
Vice
President William Lai, the leading candidate from the Democratic Progressive
Party, faces criticism from Beijing for his pro-independence stance. Lai
emphasized the pursuit of peaceful relations with China, aiming to maintain
stability in the region.
The
historical rift between Taiwan and China since 1949 persists, with Beijing's
continuous claims over the island contradicting its autonomy. China's
increasingly aggressive stance hints at its intent to reclaim Taiwan, employing
military means if necessary, amidst the island's flourishing technological
economy.
