Chief Justice BR Gavai stated he will not take any government post after retiring in November. Speaking in his hometown, he emphasized justice delivery at the grassroots and criticized bureaucratic delays in judicial reforms and appointments. Gavai plans to focus on community service and personal time post-retirement.

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has announced that he will not accept any government position after his retirement in November 2025. Speaking at a memorial event in his native village of Darapur in Maharashtra's Amravati district, he said his post-retirement focus will be personal and rooted in service to his community.
Gavai, who attended the event as a resident rather than in his official capacity, reflected on his father's legacy—RS Gavai, a former governor of Kerala and Bihar—while emphasizing his commitment to accessible justice. "I will get more time after retirement, so I will try to spend more time in Darapur, Amravati and Nagpur," he said.
Highlighting the need for grassroots-level reform, he stressed the importance of bringing justice closer to citizens. As head of the Supreme Court’s judicial infrastructure committee, he had earlier drafted a plan to increase the number of taluka and district courts. Though implementation is underway, he admitted that bureaucratic red tape remains a major hurdle both in courts and government processes.
Gavai has also been vocal about delays in judicial appointments. Just a day before this event, he raised concerns in court over a talented woman lawyer who withdrew her consent for elevation to the Delhi High Court after receiving no response from the Centre for nearly a year.

His clear stand on not taking up any political or administrative post sets a tone of neutrality and independence, underscoring his belief in an impartial judiciary and civic responsibility beyond official duties.
