Kanhaiya Kumar, renowned for his passionate
speeches and hailing from the heartland of Hindi, has been appointed as the
in-charge of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) by the Congress party.
This strategic move comes ahead of next year's general elections, as Congress
aims to invigorate its student wing.
In a letter signed by K C Venugopal, General
Secretary of Congress, it was announced that Kanhaiya Kumar has been appointed
as the AICC in-charge of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) with
immediate effect, as appointed by the respected Congress President, Mallikarjun
Kharge.
Founded on April 9, 1971, NSUI is the student
wing of the Congress party. Indira Gandhi established this organization by
merging the Kerala Students Union and the West Bengal State Chhatra Parishad,
creating a national platform for students. Currently, Neeraj Kunadan leads
NSUI.
Who is Kanhaiya Kumar? Born in 1987, Kumar
began his journey in student politics at Patna College of Commerce in 2007. In
September 2015, he assumed the role of president of the Jawaharlal Nehru
University Students' Union (JNUSU) and leader of the All India Students
Federation (AISF). In 2021, Kumar joined the Congress, transitioning from the
Communist Party of India (CPI). On this decision, he expressed, "I am
joining Congress because it's not just a party, it's an idea. It's the country's
oldest and most democratic party, and I am emphasizing 'democratic'... Many of
us believe that the country cannot survive without Congress."
Kanhaiya Kumar is known for sharing the stage
with other young leaders like Jignesh Mevani and Hardik Patel during political
rallies. His sharp critiques of the Modi-led government have garnered
attention. In 2016, he faced arrest by the Delhi Police on charges of sedition
relating to an event held at the JNU campus.
With Kanhaiya Kumar assuming this important role,
Congress hopes to infuse fresh energy and engage the youth ahead of the
upcoming general elections.
