Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha Membership

Congress leaders were filled with jubilation as Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership was reinstated today following an interim order by the Supreme Court that stayed his conviction in a criminal defamation case. The decision was met with exuberant celebrations by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and other party leaders, who exchanged sweets to mark the occasion.

The festivities extended beyond the party leadership, with jubilant scenes unfolding outside the residence of Sonia Gandhi, where party workers joyously danced to commemorate the development. Expressing his satisfaction, Mallikarjun Kharge welcomed the reinstatement and stressed its significance for the people of India, particularly Wayanad.

"The decision to reinstate Rahul Gandhi as an MP is a welcome step. It brings relief to the people of India, and especially to Wayanad. Whatever time is left of their tenure, BJP and Modi Govt should utilize that by concentrating on actual governance rather than denigrating Democracy by targeting opposition leaders," tweeted Kharge.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Pralhad Joshi, confirmed the restoration of Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership, emphasizing that the legal process had been followed meticulously. The Supreme Court's decision followed an appeal by the Congress leader challenging the Gujarat High Court order, which had previously upheld his conviction in the criminal defamation case related to his 'Modi surname' remark.

The Gujarat High Court's refusal to stay his conviction led to Gandhi's disqualification as an MP from Kerala's Wayanad on March 24. However, the Supreme Court's recent intervention has now paved the way for his reinstatement as a Lok Sabha member.
