After its sweeping victory in the Karnataka elections, Congress seems to have the last laugh. While reacting to BJP’s massive defeat in the elections, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge said that instead of a 'Congress-mukt Bharat,' it seems more like it is a 'BJP-mukt Dakshin Bharat'.
Kharge said, “Those who wanted to make 'Congress Mukt Bharat' (Congress-free India) spoke many things against us but today one thing has come true and that is 'BJP Mukt Dakshin Bharat' (BJP free South India)." AICC in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, State Congress president DK Shivakumar and veteran leader Siddaramaiahat were present along with him at a victory ceremony on Saturday evening. Kharge, while attending a press conference at the KPCC office in Bengaluru, said, "Ego doesn't stay for long. It's a democracy and we'll have to listen to people and bow our heads before the people who show us the right path. It's not a victory of anyone, it's a victory of the people of the state. They decided and chose. That's why we got 136 seats - huge after 36 years."
In a landslide victory, Congress won 137 seats in Karnataka, while the Bharatiya Janta Party could garner only 65 out of 244 seats. Janata Dal (Secular), headed by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, won 19 seats. Congress has created a record in terms of both vote share as well as seats which raise hope for the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke to the media after the election results were out. He said, ““Karnataka mein nafrat ki bazaar bandh hui hain. Mohabbat ki dukaan khuli hain (The market of hate has shut in Karnataka. Shops of love have opened).” “We were with the poor, we fought for their issues”, he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Congress for its victory as well as expressed his gratitude to BJP workers for working hard on the party's campaign.
