A new record was recently set by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the first person to have 500 million Instagram followers.
The fugitive Manchester United player captured media interest last week with his two-part explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.
He was extremely critical of the club's owners, manager Erik ten Hag, and club legends Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville.
Although he received harsh criticism for his interview, he persisted in growing his fan base until it reached 500 million.
Longtime rival Messi now ranks second in the world with 376 million followers.
The top 10 Instagram users in terms of followers only include the two well-known football players..
Piers Morgan was quick to congratulate Cristiano Ronaldo by tweeting, "Cristiano Ronaldo became the first person to reach 500 million followers on Instagram, 124 million more than his closest competitor in second place... Lionel Messi." Congrats.’
Kylie Jenner is closely followed by Selena Gomez and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in third place.
Despite some recent backlash this season, Ronaldo has a huge Instagram following that shows how much he is loved.
The former Real Madrid star, who is now entirely focused on the Qatar 2022 World Cup, will not, however, be concerned about his fan base. He is expected to play for Portugal on Thursday against Ghana in their World Cup debut.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is hoping to add the World Cup to his already impressive resume. He helped his country win the Euros in 2016 and is likely taking part in his final international match.
