Tamil Nadu braces for intense weather as Cyclone Fengal nears, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing heavy rainfall warnings. The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression, expected to develop into Cyclone Fengal today, November 27. A red alert has been declared for Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Chennai and nearby districts remain on yellow and orange alerts, signaling potential heavy rains through the week.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai forecasts widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts, including Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, and Kanchipuram. As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in Chennai, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur will remain closed. Authorities have been on high alert, urging residents to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
Rainfall intensity is expected to peak on Wednesday, with the storm possibly making landfall by evening. Coastal areas face risks of flooding and waterlogging, prompting rescue teams to be on standby. Relief measures, including the setup of shelters and supply of emergency provisions, are underway.
