Galore at French Open: Day 3 Serves Up Unanticipated Results and Spectacular
Tennis
The third day of exhilarating main draw action
at the French Open left tennis fans in awe, as a few unexpected twists led to
high-profile casualties. While some top seeds like Casper Ruud, Holger Rune,
and Iga Swiatek triumphed with ease, others faced disappointment and bowed out
early. Let's dive into the three most shocking upsets that unfolded on the
thrilling third day of the French Open, which took place on Tuesday.
#1
Daniil Medvedev: A Clay Court Conundrum
When it comes to clay courts, Daniil Medvedev
doesn't typically shine. However, the World No. 2 arrived at the French Open in
extraordinary form, riding the wave of his recent triumph at the Rome Masters
1000. With this win under his belt, the Russian star posed a serious threat to
the competition, joining the ranks of top contenders Carlos Alcaraz and Novak
Djokovic.
While Alcaraz and Djokovic sailed through the
first round effortlessly, Medvedev faced a fierce challenge on Court Philippe
Chatrier. Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild proved to be his formidable
match, taking the first set in a nail-biting tie-breaker. Seyboth Wild even had
two set points in the second set tie-break, narrowly escaping a two-set deficit
for Medvedev. The Russian seized the opportunity to regain control, securing a
two-sets-to-one lead. However, Seyboth Wild had other plans.
Displaying an exceptional level of play,
Seyboth Wild dominated the last two sets, dropping a mere seven games. His
victory marked a significant milestone as he became the first player since 2000
to defeat the second seed at the French Open (a feat last achieved by Mark
Philippousis against Pete Sampras). Moreover, Seyboth Wild ranked 172nd in the
world, became the lowest-ranked player to eliminate the second seed at Roland
Garros since 1998. In his post-match interview, an elated Seyboth Wild
expressed his joy, stating, "Playing against a player like Daniil, beating
him on this court is a dream come true. I focused on getting to the net and
using my forehand, and it worked wonders."
Seyboth Wild, a two-time Challenger winner this
year, delivered an impressive performance with 69 winners against Medvedev.
Reflecting on his match against the World No. 2, the Brazilian qualifier
admitted, "It was a tough battle. I started cramping in the second set,
but I gave it my all and played my best tennis. I'm extremely pleased with my
performance." As Seyboth Wild advances to the next round, he will face
either Guido Pella or Quentin Halys, while Medvedev's season record now stands
at 39-6.
#2 Barbora
Krejcikova: A Sudden Fall
Just two years after her remarkable title run
at the French Open, 13th seed Barbora Krejcikova encountered an unexpected
setback in the first round, facing a resolute opponent in Lesia Tsurenko. The
34-year-old Ukrainian, currently ranked 66th in the world, dominated the match,
conceding only six games in a swift one-hour and twenty-seven-minute victory.
Tsurenko, who previously reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2018,
claimed her first top-20 win at a Grand Slam since defeating Caroline Wozniacki
when she was ranked No. 2 at Flushing Meadows.
Tsurenko showcased exceptional skills on the
return, converting five of eight break points and committing fewer unforced
errors (15) compared to Krejcikova. Although the 13th seed attempted a
comeback, gaining a 3-0 lead in the second set, Tsurenko swiftly halted her
resurgence. With six of the next seven games in her favor, Tsurenko secured a
place in the second round. Delighted with her victory, the Ukrainian player
said, "I'm thrilled about this win. It was a challenging draw for me,
given that she's a remarkable clay-court player. I prepared myself thoroughly
for this match, played aggressively, and fought for every point with
determination."
In the next round, Tsurenko will face Lauren
Davis as she seeks a place in the third round. On the other hand, Krejcikova
suffered her second consecutive loss at Roland Garros since claiming the title
in 2021.
#3
Anhelina Kalinina: Another Seed Shaken
Anhelina Kalinina, the 25th seed, endured a
tough day on the third day of the French Open, winning just five games before
exiting the tournament in a swift 82 minutes. Her opponent, 79th-ranked Diane
Parry, delivered an impressive performance, continuing her giant-killing spree.
Notably, Parry had also defeated defending French Open champion Barbora
Krejcikova in the first round a year prior. This time, the reigning Paris 125
champion delighted the home crowd on Court Simone-Mathieu, striking 21 winners
against Kalinina, who had reached the Rome final just the previous week.
Following the second top-30 win of her career,
both achieved at Roland Garros, Parry now prepares to face 16-year-old Mirra
Andreeva, the youngest player in this year's main draw. Andreeva made a
spectacular debut, conceding only three games in her Grand Slam main draw match
against American Alison Riske-Amritraj.
