Telangana witnessed a devastating rain spell this week, with the death toll rising to 23 as torrential downpours wreaked havoc in Mulugu district. On Friday, 14 more bodies were recovered from floodwaters, making it one of the deadliest incidents during this year's monsoon season.

Mulugu district experienced an astonishing 649.8mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, ending at 8:30 am on Thursday, making it the heaviest 24-hour rainfall recorded in India this monsoon season. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) tweeted about the record-breaking figures, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The village of Kondai, which was entirely submerged on Thursday, was responsible for eight of the fourteen deaths that were reported. On Friday, the bodies of those who had been washed away by the swollen Jampanna Vagu stream were found. Authorities are concerned that the death toll will grow as floodwaters recede and additional remains are discovered.

Despite limited rainfall on Friday, concerns persist as authorities anticipate further casualties. The government has dispatched Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers to provide emergency supplies to survivors in Kondai, who have taken refuge on elevated spots. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have also been actively involved in shifting survivors to rehabilitation centers in the Eturnagaram mandal headquarters.

The intense rain spell has caused widespread destruction, including in the villages of Malyala and Dodla. Sathyavathi Rathod, minister for tribal welfare, has asked people in flooded villages to wait to return home.

The priority is still on rescue and aid operations as the situation develops. The government is making concerted efforts to aid the impacted areas and guarantee the safety of its citizens. The tragedy in Mulugu district highlights the difficulties caused by heavy monsoon downpours and the importance of effective disaster management strategies for safeguarding vulnerable populations during such disasters.
