Mumbai is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas on Saturday. The city has been placed under a 'yellow' weather alert, indicating the possibility of intense rainfall in specific locations on Sunday. However, relief is expected in the following days, as the alert status downgrades to 'green' on July 24 and July 25, signaling a likelihood of moderate rainfall during that period.
The IMD's predictions suggest that Friday afternoon witnessed moderate to intense rainfall in certain districts, including Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and the ghat regions of Pune. These areas experienced heavy downpours at isolated places for approximately 3-4 hours.
Though Mumbai's primary weather station in Santacruz recorded a relatively modest 29mm of rain in the last 24 hours by 8:30 am on Friday, the intensity of rainfall picked up significantly during the late morning and afternoon hours.
The situation was further compounded by a high tide of 4.21 meters at 2:27 pm, potentially leading to waterlogging in some areas. Notably, Sion Road No. 24 faced waterlogging issues, prompting the closure of the planned route between Sion Circle and Sion Station signal. Additionally, several bus routes were diverted from the afternoon onwards to cope with the heavy rains.
As the IMD continues to closely monitor weather conditions and issue timely alerts, authorities and residents are advised to exercise caution and take necessary measures to ensure safety and mitigate any adverse impacts during this rainy spell in Mumbai.
