Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Tragedy: One Dead, Six Critical After Roof Caves In

A roof collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 during heavy rain resulted in one death and six injuries. The incident led to flight cancellations and suspended operations. Authorities are responding to the crisis and monitoring the situation.
It was a black Friday morning when a part of the roof of Delhi Airport Terminal 1 caved in due to the rain and there was one dead and six others injured. The collapse, which occurred around 5:at 30 AM, all departures from the domestic terminal have been halted and will not resume until at least 2 PM.
The roof sheet and support beams collapsed, falling on cars that were parked in the terminal pick up and drop off zone, this according to airport officials. Several automobiles, including taxis, were affected in the mishap. First responders attempted to pull out victims still trapped under the rubble, one man was pulled out from underneath a car that was compressed by an iron beam.
As a measure of safety, airport authorities have suspended all check-in operations and movements out of Terminal 1 in the wake of the calamity. IndiGo and SpiceJet, the two main carriers that use this terminal, have said they are cancelling flights up to the afternoon.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said he is “personally overseeing it” and directed airlines to help the passengers. The minister said that there were people who were injured and have been taken to nearby hospitals.
The incident occurs at the time when Delhi is witnessing second day of heavy downpour which has led to water logging and traffic snarls in the national capital. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 154 mm of rain from Thursday to Friday morning.
While the rescue mission is underway, the travelers are recommended to confirm their flight details before going to the airport. This unfortunate event underscores the need for proper maintenance of structures and being prepared for extreme weather conditions particularly in strategic facilities such as airports.
