Delhi's Patiala House Court has granted an extension of four more days of custody to Sanjay Prakash Rai, also known as 'Sherpuriya,' in connection with a money laundering case. The decision was made on Friday after the expiration of the initial seven-day remand granted to the Directorate of Enforcement (ED).
During the hearing, Special Judge Shailendra Malik considered the arguments presented by the counsel for the ED and the accused, ultimately extending the police custody of Sherpuriya. The ED had requested an extension of remand for an additional seven days to conduct further investigations. This includes looking into the money received as a donation from the Dalmia Family Office Trust, funds generated from the sale of property in Gujarat, and recording statements from other individuals involved in the case.
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) NK Matta emphasised the need for the accused to remain in custody in order to examine and record statements from five additional individuals. Furthermore, they sought to verify the details of the property sold in Gujarat and investigate the transactions of a jeweller from Chandni Chowk who is alleged to have assisted in the illicit transfer of funds.
During the proceedings, the SPP revealed that the interrogation had uncovered evidence of Rs 10 crore (approximately $1.5 million) being laundered. This amount initially had been estimated to be Rs 6 crores. The accused allegedly deposited this cash amount into a bank account through intermediaries.
Previously, on June 2, the court had granted the ED a seven-day remand of the accused, which has now been extended due to the ongoing investigations. The case highlights the efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating money laundering and tracking illicit financial transactions. The extended custody period will allow for a more thorough examination of the evidence and the involvement of other individuals connected to the case.
