Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced the closure of schools on Monday in response to the ongoing heavy rainfall that has wreaked havoc across the city. The incessant downpour has led to severe waterlogging, collapsing houses, and an alarming increase in incidents of tree falls.
In a tweet written in Hindi, CM Kejriwal stated, "Considering the torrential rains that have been lashing Delhi for the past two days and the warnings issued by the meteorological department, all schools in Delhi will remain closed tomorrow."
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that North-West India, including Delhi, will continue to experience high-intensity rain for the next two days, followed by a decrease in intensity. The IMD's tweet on Sunday revealed, "Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain are expected in most areas of Delhi and its adjoining regions."
The areas expected to witness rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms include Burari, Civil Lines, Kashmiri Gate, Seelampur, Akshardham, Palam, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, and NCR (Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram).
In response to the situation, CM Kejriwal has directed his ministers, as well as the city mayor, to visit the affected areas. He has also instructed all department officers to cancel their Sunday holiday and take immediate action.
The Delhi Fire Service has reported 15 incidents of house collapses, resulting in one fatality. The heavy rainfall has caused traffic jams in multiple parts of the city and has led to flooding in parks, underpasses, markets, schools, and hospitals.
The cause of this intense downpour in Delhi can be attributed to a combination of factors. The city witnessed a record-breaking rainfall of 153 mm within a 24-hour period, as recorded at 8:30 am on Sunday, according to the IMD. This is the highest amount of rainfall in a single day during July since 1982. The convergence of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds has resulted in this exceptionally heavy rainfall, marking the first instance of "very heavy"; rainfall for the season in the city.
The situation in Delhi remains challenging as the rainfall continues. The closure of schools aims to ensure the safety of students and alleviate further disruption caused by the inclement weather. The authorities are working tirelessly to address the aftermath of the heavy downpour and provide assistance to affected residents.
