Dense fog blanketed Delhi-NCR, reducing visibility to zero and delaying over 100 flights. Air Quality Index reached 409 ('severe'), prompting GRAP Stage 3 restrictions. The India Meteorological Department forecasts persistent fog and low temperatures, while authorities struggle to mitigate pollution and manage transport disruptions in the region.
Delhi-NCR woke up to a dense fog blanket on Friday, drastically reducing visibility to zero in many areas, including Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) reported delays in over 100 flights, with non-CAT III compliant aircraft severely affected. Passengers were advised to check with airlines for updates. Train schedules also faced disruptions, though exact figures were not immediately available.
The air quality in the region has worsened significantly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the 'severe' category, recorded at 409 early Friday. The combination of stagnant air, calm winds, and low temperatures has intensified pollution levels. This decline has prompted authorities to reimpose Stage 3 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), banning non-essential construction activities.
Delhi experienced similar foggy conditions between January 2 and 3, marking the longest zero-visibility period of the season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the minimum temperature to hover around 6°C and the maximum at 20°C, with dense fog persisting through the day.
Thursday provided some respite with a sunny afternoon, but pollution levels remained alarming. A recent report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) revealed a 12% reduction in PM10 levels compared to the 2017 baseline. However, only 31% of targeted cities under the National Clean Air Programme achieved their air quality goals.
