Turbulence unfolded during a session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly as members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in a disruptive protest on Wednesday. The intense episode saw BJP MLAs tearing apart copies of recently passed Bills and flinging them in the direction of Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani. As a consequence of their actions, ten BJP MLAs, including notable figures like Dr C N Ashwath Narayan and R Ashok, were temporarily suspended from the assembly.
The protest originated from the Congress government’s decision to assign IAS officers to extend a welcome to leaders from various opposition parties who were attending a national-level meeting in Bengaluru over the past two days. Expressing their discontent, BJP legislators launched a protest within the House.
Despite the commotion, the government managed to successfully pass five Bills in the Assembly. However, tensions escalated when Speaker U T Khader chose to proceed with budget discussions without adjourning for lunch. In response, the BJP legislators intensified their protest, which culminated in torn Bills being hurled at Deputy Speaker Lamani, who was seated in the Speaker’s chair. Marshals were promptly called upon to safeguard Lamani from further disruptions.
Lamani, who belongs to the Dalit community, alleged that the BJP legislators specifically targeted him based on his caste background. Subsequently, the session was temporarily adjourned for lunch. Meanwhile, members of the ruling Congress criticised the marshals for failing to take action against the BJP MLAs for their misconduct towards the Deputy Speaker. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and Urban Development Minister Byrati Suresh demanded the suspension of the BJP MLAs and questioned the marshals’ lack of intervention.
In response to their colleagues’ suspension, the BJP legislators announced their intention to initiate a vote of no confidence against Speaker U T Khader. The situation within the Karnataka Legislative Assembly remains tense as the political impasse continues.
