DRI Foils Drug Trafficking Attempt At Mumbai Airport, Seizes Cocaine Worth Rs 15 Crore

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday successfully stopped a drug smuggling operation at Mumbai airport and apprehended two individuals for their alleged connection to the matter. 


One of whom was a female Ugandan national, was apprehended by authorities. 


As per a report by news agency ANI, approximately 1496 grams of cocaine, valued at Rs 15 crore, were confiscated during this successful operation.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday successfully stopped a drug smuggling operation at Mumbai airport and apprehended two individuals for their alleged connection to the matter.

The DRI officials acted upon intelligence reports and subsequently arrested an Indian passenger on August 18, 2023 and also apprehended the individual as soon as he arrived in Mumbai on Flight No. ET 640 from Addis Ababa. 


Upon conducting a thorough search examination of the passenger's luggage, officials found 1496 grams of white powder. This illicit substance, suspected to be cocaine, is estimated to have a market value of approximately Rs 15 crore. 


Following a rigorous interrogation of the detained passenger as well as after closely monitoring the situation, DRI officers successfully executed a well-planned operation. They set up a trap and successfully apprehended the individual who intended to receive the contraband drugs. 

Drug Trafficking
DRI confiscates Rs 15 crore worth of cocaine and apprehends 2 at Mumbai airport.

The arrests of the individuals took place in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The authorities revealed that the individual detained as the recipient of the contraband is identified as a female Ugandan national. 


They also confirmed that both the persons responsible for transporting the drugs, as well as the recipient, have been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985. 


Following their arrests, they have been remanded to judicial custody, in accordance with the procedures. The DRI officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing, and they are looking forward to uncovering any additional links within the drug supply chain.
