The suspension of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Congress floor leader, from the Lok Sabha is expected to be revoked in the coming days following his appearance before the House Privileges Committee on Wednesday.
As per a report by ANI, officials familiar with the matter disclosed that the committee has recommended the revocation to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who is anticipated to take prompt action once the recommendation is received.
Chowdhury's suspension, which was initiated on August 10, was prompted by allegations of "gross and deliberate misconduct." These allegations arose due to his comments during a debate on a non-confidence motion against the government, where he made remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's handling of the Manipur violence.
In response, Chowdhury argued that his suspension was unwarranted and asserted that he had no intention of causing harm. He suggested that if his comments were deemed inappropriate, they could have been removed from the records.
The privileges committee, led by Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Sunil Singh, convened last week to deliberate on Chowdhury's case. Although the charges were considered significant, informed sources suggested that his status as a senior parliamentarian could lead to his reinstatement.
Several reports claimed that the matter emphasized the committee's commitment to adhering to conventions and rules, ensuring that Chowdhury was given an opportunity to present his perspective.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who holds a five-term Member of Parliament position, is notable for being the first-floor leader of the largest Opposition party to be suspended from the House.
Following the debate on the no-confidence motion, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi proposed a resolution against Chowdhury. Speaker Om Birla deemed Chowdhury's behavior during the debate inappropriate, prompting his subsequent suspension. Within two days, Chowdhury expressed feeling "hanged" and compelled to face trial.
