Government Cracks Down on 25 OTT Platforms Over Obscene Content Allegations

India has banned 25 OTT platforms, including ULLU and ALTBalaji, over allegations of obscene and pornographic content. The action follows growing public concern, legal scrutiny, and political pressure. The move is part of a larger push to regulate digital platforms and uphold content standards across online streaming services.

The Indian government has issued a sweeping ban on 25 OTT platforms, including well-known names like ULLU and ALTBalaji, citing concerns over vulgar and pornographic content. This decisive action was confirmed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which accused these digital platforms of violating content norms by streaming obscene and sexually explicit material.

Among the affected apps and websites are Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App. The government’s move forms part of a broader campaign to regulate online content and enforce decency standards across digital platforms. Authorities have directed internet service providers and app stores to block access to the listed services.

The ban comes in the wake of increasing public and legal scrutiny. In April, the Supreme Court responded to a PIL seeking a clampdown on explicit streaming content. Notices were served to the Centre, along with major platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Although the court acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, it noted that content regulation primarily lies within the jurisdiction of the executive or legislative branches.

In a separate incident, OTT platform ULLU faced intense backlash after a clip from its web series House Arrest went viral. Featuring actor Ajaz Khan, the video was widely condemned for its offensive portrayal of women. The National Commission for Women took suo moto action, warning of severe consequences and urging regulatory bodies to act swiftly.

Political voices, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, have also highlighted the issue. She criticised the continued operation of platforms like ULLU and ALTBalaji despite prior attempts at regulation, pressing for stronger enforcement.

The government’s ban signals a tougher stance on content moderation and could pave the way for a broader overhaul of digital media guidelines in India.
