The Assamese government led by Himanta Biswa Sharma has sought to implement the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) in a strict manner so as to make husbands liable for carrying out unlawful child marriages. The reform seeks to put a blanket ban on child marriages in Assam and safeguard interests of minor girls. Not only will husbands be booked for marrying minor girls, harsher penalties and punishments will be imposed upon husbands who engage in sexual activities with wives below the age of 14 years. This has added a much needed extra layer of protection. Apart from sexual abuse and child marriages, the law has also been aimed to put a check upon underage motherhood as it is detrimental for the body of the young wife. The appropriate age for motherhood is 22 years to 30 years.” Himanta Biswa Sharma Parallel Steps Taken by Himanta Biswa Sharma Himanta Biswa Sharma’s government has also released appointment letters to nearly 1200 people for filling up vacancies in Health and Family Welfare Department and Home and Political Department of Assam for effective implementation of the plans on ground.
