INC President Mallikarjun Kharge Approves Congress Candidates for Karnataka MLC Bye Elections

In the upcoming bye elections for the Karnataka Legislative Council, which have to take place as three leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), namely Laxman Savadi, Baburao Chianchansur, and R Shankar had resigned from their positions as they were denied party tickets for the Assembly polls of 2023.
Notably, a prominent leader of the Lingayat community, Jagadish Shettar, also left the BJP and joined the Congress party due to a similar issue. Shettar contested the elections from the Hubballi – Dharwad Central seat on a Congress ticket but was unsuccessful in securing a victory. Congress is deliberating on how to accommodate Shettar, a Lingayat community leader considering the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The Member of Legislative Council (MLC) bye elections will be decided through voting by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), with the Congress holding an advantage of 135 seats. The other parties hold 89 seats in total, with BJP (66) being the official opposition. The election is scheduled for June 30, and the results will be announced on the same day.
