India reaffirmed its stance after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that Canada lacked hard evidence linking India to Hardeep Nijjar’s killing, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. India dismissed the allegations, expelling Canadian diplomats in response.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated its position after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that his government had no “hard evidentiary proof” linking India to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. During his testimony before Canada's Foreign Interference Inquiry on Wednesday, Trudeau acknowledged that Canada had only shared intelligence, not concrete evidence, when it accused Indian government agents of involvement in Nijjar’s murder last year. He also claimed that India had violated Canada’s sovereignty, further straining diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Responding to Trudeau's admission, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed that India had consistently maintained its stance. “What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying all along – Canada has presented no evidence to support the serious allegations it has made against India and its diplomats,” Jaiswal said. He added that the diplomatic fallout between India and Canada is the result of Trudeau’s “cavalier behaviour.”

The case has been a source of significant tension since Canada accused India of possible involvement in Nijjar’s killing in September last year. India rejected these claims as “absurd” and has repeatedly criticized Canada for allowing pro-Khalistan activities on its soil. In retaliation, India recently expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its high commissioner.
