External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Maldives results in renewed cooperation despite previous tensions. In a significant diplomatic development, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his country's commitment to cooperation with India, following a two-day visit by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The visit, marked by cordial interactions and the launch of several projects, signals a thaw in relations that had been strained since Muizzu's election last November.

President Muizzu, addressing concerns about the 'India Out' campaign that was pivotal to his electoral success, stated that he would not allow anything contradicting his government's foreign policy. He emphasized continuity in prioritizing Maldives' interests, suggesting a pragmatic approach to international relations.

The shift in stance comes as Maldives grapples with severe economic challenges. With a looming budgetary gap and significant debt repayments due, including $1 billion in 2026, the island nation faces potential default. India has already provided financial assistance, including a $50 million payment rollover in May, with another due in September.

Jaishankar's visit highlighted India's commitment to supporting its neighbors. Ongoing projects like the 28-island development and the Greater Male connectivity initiative underscore India's role in Maldives' progress. Additionally, Maldives' security concerns, particularly regarding drug trafficking and piracy in the Indian Ocean, necessitate Indian support.

This diplomatic success extends beyond Maldives, serving as a message to other regional nations, particularly Bangladesh, currently facing political turmoil. India's willingness to assist without leveraging its support contrasts with other global powers, reinforcing its position as a reliable partner in South Asia.

The renewed cooperation between India and Maldives demonstrates the pragmatic realization that regional stability and economic progress are intertwined. As President Muizzu navigates domestic politics and international relations, the visit's outcome suggests a balanced approach, recognizing India's crucial role while asserting Maldivian sovereignty.

This diplomatic breakthrough not only stabilizes India-Maldives relations but also strengthens India's position as a key player in regional affairs, capable of addressing complex geopolitical challenges with nuance and foresight.
