Gohil, India's first openly gay prince, disclosed a distressing ordeal he faced
after coming out about his sexuality. His parents, in a shocking bid to change
his sexual orientation, attempted to subject him to brain surgery. This
revelation sheds light on the harrowing experiences endured by LGBTQ+
individuals in India.
After Prince Gohil
revealed his sexual identity, he was met with humiliation as his parents sought
medical intervention to "convert" him. They went to doctors, hoping
to find a way to "perform a surgery" on his brain, and even resorted
to electroshock therapy.
However, their cruel attempts were thwarted when doctors in the United States, where they sought the so-called "treatment," refused to conduct the procedures, firmly asserting that homosexuality is not a mental disorder.
In an interview
with Sky News, Prince Gohil expressed his anguish stating, "It was an
absolute case of discrimination and violation of human rights. Whether I'm a
prince or not, parents have no right to subject their children to this kind of
torture."
Despite the failed attempts, the emotional distress inflicted on him was significant. Prince Gohil highlighted the widespread issue, stating that many individuals in India suffer similar ordeals due to a lack of education and awareness, leading to homophobia and bigotry. He emphasized the need for education to combat these misconceptions.
As the heir of
the Maharaja of Rajpipla, an erstwhile princely State in Gujarat, Prince Gohil
is now determined to fight against conversion therapy. He has initiated a legal
battle in the Supreme Court, seeking an outright ban on such practices through
legislation.
The prince first
gained media attention in 2006 when he openly declared his homosexuality, which
sparked protests and angry demonstrations in his home state. Enraged crowds
even burned his effigies during that time.
