Shombi Sharp, the United Nations Resident
Coordinator in India, has enthusiastically renamed India's G20 Presidency to
the "SDG20 Presidency" in recognition of its commitment to achieving
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sharp made this declaration during an
event titled 'India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development,' where a
Letter of Intent was exchanged between UN-India and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
In his address, Sharp emphasized the
significance of the SDGs as a universal path to peace and prosperity. He
praised India's impact on SDG targets globally, particularly in the Global
South, through its leadership at the G20. He hailed the unanimously agreed New
Delhi Declaration, which places SDGs at its core, as the driving force behind
the rebranding of India's G20 Presidency as "SDG20."
Sharp highlighted the deepening partnership
between the UN system in India and New Delhi, describing it as a "two-way
partnership" that reflects India's development trajectory. He noted that
the UN in India has been actively identifying and sharing Indian development
best practices with other countries worldwide, further amplifying India's role
on the global stage.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Sharp
unveiled a new partnership between the UN in India and the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation to enhance Indian South-South Cooperation. He characterized
India's G20 Presidency as a pivotal moment, where crucial commitments were made
on climate action, gender equality, digital transformation, the Green
Development Pact, and the SDG Acceleration Action Plan of the G20. These
initiatives were supported by the New Delhi Declaration and gained significance
in the lead-up to the SDG summit in New York.
The 'India-UN for Global South: Delivering for
Development' event was attended by prominent figures, including EAM S
Jaishankar and United Nations General Assembly President Dennis Francis, along
with foreign ministers from various nations. Minister Jaishankar is set to
address the United Nations General Assembly on September 26 before concluding
his visit to New York City and traveling to Washington, DC.
