India is making waves at the 31st World University Games with an impressive haul of 23 medals across various disciplines, demonstrating the prowess of athletes nurtured under the Khelo India scheme and Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

 

As of August 3rd, the halfway mark of the event, Indian athletes have secured these medals across shooting, archery, judo, and athletics. The country's contingent, comprising 256 athletes, has been delivering exceptional performances on the global stage.

 

Leading the charge is the shooting team, clinching 14 medals, including eight golds, all won by TOPS athletes. Notably, shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar has contributed significantly to India's success, bagging four medals, three of which are gold.

 

India's young talents excel at the 31st World University Games, securing 23 medals across various disciplines, a testament to Khelo India and TOPS initiatives.

Archery has also been a highlight, with Khelo India athlete Archer Aman Saini contributing to three of the medals secured by India.

 

Furthermore, India's collective efforts have positioned the country in the Top 5 of the medals tally for the initial five days of the event, marking a historic achievement.

 

It's worth mentioning that this year's performance already surpasses India's previous best record of five medals in the 2015 University Games. India had claimed a total of 18 medals in the World University Games until 2019. However, in the 2021 edition, the country has soared past expectations by clinching 23 medals so far.

The Khelo India scheme, a government-backed initiative aimed at identifying and nurturing emerging sports talent, has played a pivotal role in shaping these remarkable athletes. With participation across diverse sports such as archery, athletics, badminton, judo, and more, the scheme has propelled India's sporting landscape to greater heights.

 

Prominent names like Tulika Maan, Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist in Judo, and Tokyo Olympian swimmer Srihari Nataraj, alongside Indian shooting twins Udhayveer and Vijayveer Sidhu, are among the 71 Khelo India athletes competing in the games. These young talents have previously showcased their skills at the Khelo India Youth Games and the Khelo India University Games.
