'Made-in-India'

In a move aimed at bolstering its surveillance capabilities along the China and Pakistan borders, the Indian defence forces have announced plans to acquire 97 'Made-in-India' drones for surveillance purposes. This decision comes after India's recent procurement of 31 Predator drones from the United States, as part of its efforts to enhance its defence capabilities.

Government sources revealed that a comprehensive study conducted jointly by the defence forces has determined the need for 97 drones to fulfill the requirements of medium altitude long endurance surveillance along both land and sea borders. The procurement, which is estimated to cost over Rs 10,000 crore, will primarily be led by the Indian Air Force, which will receive the largest number of these unmanned aerial vehicles. The drones are designed to fly for extended periods of up to 30 hours consecutively.

'Made-in-India
Indian armed forces are set to acquire 97 medium-category and long-endurance 'Made-in-India' drones for patrolling missions along the India and China borders.

These newly acquired drones will supplement the existing fleet of over 46 Heron UAVs, which have been gradually procured by the three forces over the years. To further enhance their capabilities, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will partner with original equipment manufacturers to upgrade the existing drones through the 'Make-in-India' initiative. This will involve incorporating more than 60 percent Indian content, ensuring a significant contribution to the domestic defense manufacturing sector.

The recent acquisition of 31 Predator drones, falling under the high altitude long endurance category, will be utilized for surveillance of vast areas of strategic interest to India. With the addition of these drones and the planned procurement of the 'Made-in-India' models, India aims to enhance its monitoring capabilities and strengthen border security.

As told to India Today, these drones will be acquired under a joint acquisition plan under the 'Make in India' programme of the Union Government.

The acquisition of indigenous drones reflects India's commitment to developing its defense industry and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. By embracing the 'Make-in-India' initiative, the country aims to foster domestic manufacturing, promote technological self-reliance, and bolster national security.
