Anil Varshney, a
78-year-old Indian-American Senior Systems Engineer, alleges that he was
wrongfully terminated from his long-time job with missile defense contractor
Parsons Corporation in Alabama. The termination came after Varshney received a
video call from his dying brother-in-law in India and spoke to him in Hindi for
approximately two minutes.
Varshney explained that he stepped into an empty cubicle to take the call, ensuring there were no sensitive materials nearby. Unfortunately, a white co-worker overheard the conversation, felt intimidated by the language he didn't understand, and falsely reported Varshney for a security violation.
Despite no policy against
taking the call, Varshney was fired and subsequently blackballed from future
work with the Missile Defense Agency.
The lawsuit claims that
Varshney's termination was unjustified and without proper investigation.
Parsons Corporation denies any wrongdoing and seeks to have the lawsuit
dismissed with prejudice, demanding Varshney pay their attorneys' fees and
costs.
Varshney, who immigrated to the US in 1968 and became an American citizen, has a decorated career, including being named "Contractor of the Year" in systems engineering and receiving commendations for his work in missile defense systems.
Seeking justice, Varshney
aims to be reinstated to a comparable position, have his privileges restored,
and any disciplinary records removed. He also seeks compensation for mental
anguish, emotional distress, and punitive damages.
