On 19th September, 2023, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly mentioned that they had expelled an Indian diplomat in Canada. This action reflects a worsening of relations between the two countries. The expulsion is linked to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement, in which he accused India of being involved in the killing of the wanted Khalistani leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Melanie Joly stated that the Canadian government took this step because of allegations regarding India's role in the Khalistani leader's killing. However, she did not provide additional details about the diplomat's identity or the location from which they were expelled.

On Monday, as reported by CBC News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being responsible for the deadly shooting of the wanted Khalistani leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was shot outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, on June 18.
