ISKCON clarified its stance on Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das's arrest in Bangladesh, reaffirming its support for his rights despite prior administrative disassociation. Amid protests and legal challenges, the organization emphasized its commitment to protecting Hindus while navigating complex socio-political tensions.
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has clarified its stance regarding the recent arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu in Bangladesh. Accused of sedition, his arrest has sparked protests and reignited debates on religious freedom.
In an official statement, ISKCON confirmed that Chinmoy Krishna Das was removed from all organizational roles due to a breach of discipline. However, it emphasized that the disassociation was administrative and not an attempt to distance itself from supporting his fundamental rights. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of Hindus and their places of worship in Bangladesh.
The arrest follows allegations that the monk raised a flag over a platform displaying the Bangladesh national flag, an act deemed seditious. This incident has led to widespread protests, with calls for his release growing louder. The controversy has also spurred legal actions, including a petition seeking to ban ISKCON in Bangladesh, labeling it a "radical organization." However, the Bangladesh High Court dismissed the plea, asserting there was no basis for banning ISKCON.
