After almost 3 years of break, the Japanese government foreign minister visits China
amid the detention of its citizen in China.

Background
A Japanese national, working as a senior employee with Japanese pharmaceutical
firm Astellas Pharma Inc. was detained by China for unknown reasons in March
2023. The spokesperson of the Company also confirmed this.
What is The Significance of This Meeting?
Amid the rising regional tension between the two countries this meeting was
particularly important. The Japanese Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi called on Beijing
to release its citizen when he met Chinese Diplomat Win Gang on Sunday at the
Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
While talking to reporters Hayashi even claimed to seek consular access to the
Japanese citizen urging China to follow a transparent judicial process. He added that
to improve ties, he and Qin have agreed to maintain close communication "at all
levels" including between leaders and foreign ministers.
Hayashi even met the representatives of the detained Japanese businessman
operating in China on Saturday evening. An environment of fear has developed in
the business community ahead of this detention that more members from the
business community could also be detained. Hayashi also said he will continue to
urge China to ensure a transparent, predictable and fair business environment and
pledged support for Japanese firms' operations in China, the ministry added.
Others Matters Discussed in The Meet
During the meet, Hayashi and Qin talked on other matters also like "information
dissemination" on the planned release of treated water from the crippled Fukushima
No. 1 nuclear power plant arguing that Chinese stance on this release "is not based
in scientific evidence" and even called upon China to play a "responsible role" in
conformity with international law, in working toward peace and stability in Ukraine
following Russian invasion in February, 2022.
