Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud officially steps down on November 10, marking the end of a transformative tenure. Known for progressive judgments and efforts to modernize India’s judiciary, his legacy includes some of the most significant rulings of recent years.

During his time on the Supreme Court, Justice Chandrachud made landmark contributions to individual rights and social justice. Notable among these was his ruling in 2017 that recognized privacy as a fundamental right, underscoring its essential role in protecting citizens’ dignity. His 2018 judgment to decriminalize same-sex relations by reading down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code marked a historic moment for LGBTQ+ rights in India, emphasizing that sexual orientation is central to human dignity.

Chandrachud further advocated gender equality by striking down Section 497, which criminalized adultery with gender bias, thereby advancing personal liberty. His rulings often challenged traditional norms, pushing forward modern, equitable interpretations of constitutional rights. In 2021, he ordered the demolition of Noida's Supertech twin towers, citing regulatory violations as part of his commitment to integrity in governance.

In 2023, Justice Chandrachud’s decision granting administrative control to the Delhi government in its dispute with the Lieutenant Governor reinforced federal principles and the importance of local governance. He also contributed to the resolution of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in 2019, a highly sensitive case that shaped India's socio-political landscape.
